Walking the Walk

The National MS Society is kicking off their annual Walk MS event. I am planning to be a part of that event and I am asking you to join me in the fight against MS by making a contribution to support my effort.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is dedicated to ending the devastating effects of MS. They simultaneously fund research for a cure while also helping people who currently live with MS lead more fulfilling lives. I believe in the work they do, and I invite you to see for yourself all the good they’ve done for the MS community. More than 400,000 Americans live with MS, and your support can and will make changes in their lives.

Please help by making a donation - large or small - to fight MS. Or, why not join me on the day of the event? Become a participant and side by side, as teammates, we can work together to raise the funds to make a difference.

Whatever you can give will help! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Make all checks payable to: National MS Society and please send your donation to me.

New Beginnings

The first day of the new year tends to lead to resolutions for people. I would guess one of the most popular resolutions would be to loose weight and/or get healthy. With that in mind I thought I would link up to some of my favorite articles on the subject.

25 Reasons Why You Should Start Drinking Green Tea

There is a lot of great information in these links. Trouble is reading them all will take as much time as getting out in the park and going for a walk. I need to figure out time for both.

Current Weight: 272.4

Well that weight is a little better. I need the month of May to be the month I get, and stay, consistently in the 260s. Hopefully by Monday I can get back down to 269 and keep it there. Going to a grad Par-Tay tonight so that might throw a kink in the plans. I am going to try to get a ride in right after work though to help balance things out. Until next time.

Current Weight: 274.2

This is the most I have weighed this month! I need to get my butt back on track and get back to fatblogging. It doesn’t seem like I can get my blood pressure under control on my own so it looks like in a week and a half I am going to have to go on the drugs. That really sucks. Hopefully I can get off of them as my weight gets closer to my optimum weight.

I just did a quick 12.8 mile ride in 25 minutes. It was my fastest top mph and average mph. I was averaging 12.8 mph not too bad. I have been hovering around the 10 mph mark. This was also my shortest ride too though. My legs feel like jelly right now. I kinda forgot how much I love that feeling.

Current Weight: 271.4

Looks like I am getting close (again) to the 260s. My fatblogging has wained a bit just because there isn’t that much that is new to post about. I am walking a half hour at lunch nearly every day and trying to cycle two to three times a week.

My diet has been pretty consistent. However I have stopped consuming all milk products and extra oils for the time being. When you add that to no animal products it is surprising how quickly vital statistics can return to the normal range. I have only been eating this way for about a week and my blood pressure which was regularly in the stage 2 range of hypertension is lowering significantly. A couple more days and I think it should be in the solid pre-hypertension range. Give me another week or two and it will be in the normal range.

I am also thinking about getting the Wild Divine game. It uses biofeedback to control the game. Learning to successfully change those thought patterns is also a fairly well known alternative treatment for high blood pressure. How great is it going to be when I see the doctor again and my blood pressure is completely under control. In a way, I can’t wait.

I am down a bit today from the weekend. Yesterday after work I took a nice 6.2 mile ride. It was really windy but that is good for the leg muscles. I think the biggest reason I like riding or walking outdoors is just because of those little differences. Yesterday’s ride will be different from today’s. With a stationary bike or treadmill I get bored too fast.

If the weather stays decent, I am hoping to take a short ride every day this week. I think it will help my body get used to being on a bike. Then next week I will go back to riding a little longer. As I see it now, 30 minutes is a decent ride for now. Once I am used to that I will be looking to go for at least hour. Within the next couple of weeks it should be getting a little warmer too. I have decided that 60º is my minimum comfortable riding temperature. That doesn’t mean I won’t ride when cooler but that is when I begin to feel comfortable.

10.4 miles

I have decided that 39º is too cold to ride 10 miles in. When I got back in this morning my fingers were pretty numb and I am still waiting for my toes to warm up. I did somehow get in 10.4 miles but I was really dragging the last couple.

It is supposed to be cold and maybe rainy or snowy tomorrow too. I am not sure if I will get out. Right now my legs feel a little like jelly which I suppose is a good thing. I just can’t wait for it to get warmer. I might have a little more fun if I didn’t have to wear gloves and a hoodie to keep warm while on the road. Until next time…

Yesterday evening I had my first real ride. I went out for 10 miles and this morning I am feeling great. I thought I might feel sore but so far that hasn’t been an issue. My game plan at this moment is to ride every other day for a while. I figure that in the beginning I need to think of it like lifting weights. I want to give my legs proper time to recover.

I have found myself so ready to get out there and do it. Last night when I left home it was a nice 61 degrees out. Within the hour, by the time I got home, it was down to 45 degrees. It was a little chilly. Around mile 7, I found myself slowing down. I am hoping to build speed and endurance over the next few weeks.

OK, honestly right now, I just want to go out and ride again. But it is still dark out and I have to get ready for work. Maybe I will see how I am feeling after work and if it is raining/snowing. We need a good rain anyhow to wash the remaining salt off the road. Until next time…

The weekends are always a little rougher for me than weekdays as far as my weight loss regimen goes. I tend to stay out later and therefore wake up later. Life on Saturday and Sundays is far less structured. Not a bad thing really just a variable to deal with. My weigh-ins on these days, when I remember, usually do not come at 5:30 or 6:00 in the morning. I guess not following the exact same pattern seven days a week is a good thing. From my past experience I know when my body gets used to something that something no longer has as great an effect on me.

Yesterday I made the plunge. I am now the owner of a 17.5″ Trek 7.2 FX. I went for a short ride yesterday and think this will really intensify my motivation. The down side right now is that it was 41º yesterday and snowed a little last night. Looks like the weather will get decent again next weekend. I am not sure if a little cold will deter me though. Hopefully I can ramp up my rides over the next few weeks to comfortably do 20 miles. Time will tell on this one. It has been a long time since I have ridden any distance. Looks like I am not only in the fatblogging arena, I will be creating a fatriding niche too. LOL

I didn’t get out for a walk this morning but I am feeling really good. Maybe it was the scale reading. Okay, I know it was the scale reading. I have been eating very well this week and it is paying off. The walking and stairs are getting easy. I think this weekend is the weekend to buy a bike. I stopped at a shop yesterday and they were so helpful. It was nice. After being to at least a half a dozen places this place actually took time to explain things to me. If I had a company I would hire that salesman in a second.

I am thinking about training for a 2 day, 150 mile round trip ride in the end of June. The guy said yesterday he thought it shouldn’t be a problem for someone in my shape to do this ride. It has been a goal in the back of my head since I was in college. I think it is about time to cross it off the list. The cool thing it is a fundraiser for the MS Society and it will help me get in better shape. Eleven weeks until the ride. I should have a decision by the end of the weekend. Until next time…
