Free legal audio books

This weekend I have been finalizing preparations for my first real vacation in a long, long time. In doing so I have been looking to find audio content to fill up my mp3 player. I have about a bazillion songs that I have collected over the past 16 years but I was thinking more on the tip of podcasts & audio books.

In my search I came across two sites I had kind of forgotten about for books that are in the public domain. The first site is Project Gutenberg for the e-book versions of these old texts. The other site is LibriVox. Here people have volunteered their time to record the readings of public domain works. So if you happen to be looking for legal, free, literary content to fill your mind you may want to check these sites out.

Since I didn’t have specific books I was looking for I found the LibriVox site a little tough to navigate. I would love to see a top downloaded link for the day, week or month. So what I did was go to Project Gutenberg, look at their top downloads and then search for them on LibriVox. When you aren’t sure what titles are and are not public domain this is a great way to get started. Some of the titles I am pulling down now are Dracula, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn & Walden. Too bad I can’t get all of these to fit on my mp3 player.
